Queenstown Lakes harbourmaster Marty Black said yesterday with 1600 athletes ''descending on Wanaka'' water safety was a major consideration. He advised swimmers training for the event to swim on the south side of Roy Bay.
Those who wanted to swim in the middle of the lake should swim in a group or have a safety kayak with them.
They should also wear a brightly coloured swimming cap or a fluorescent visibility device.
Boat users should be aware there would be more swimmers than usual in the lake and they should keep a sharp lookout at all times ''particularly in choppy conditions that could make it difficult to spot a lone swimmer''.
Pictured, Challenge competitor No 137, Emanuel Citron, of Venice, Italy, said yesterday competing was just a hobby for him, but he would normally train in Venice's Grand Canal.
