The southern hemisphere’s largest gay and lesbian winter pride event has begun in Queenstown.

Gay Ski Week QT launched on Saturday night with a function at the resort’s World Bar, kicking off eight days of snow, tunes, laughs and partying.

More than 1500 people attended last year’s event.

Organiser Sally Whitewoods said advanced bookings were up a third on 2015.

Perth’s Jordan Bruno, who featured on Australian cooking show My Kitchen Rules, is the event’s ambassador, while professional dancer Stefano Olivieri, of Dancing With The Stars fame, is also making an appearance.

Last night, Sydney DJ Adam Love was on the decks for the Anchors Away Boat Party, on Spirit of Queenstown.

Tomorrow night’s comedy night, a new event, is sold out.

A highlight of the week will be Friday night’s foam party, at Loco Cantina, while Saturday night’s final party, at the Queenstown Memorial Centre, is themed "heroes and villains".
