Care urged on icy roads

Drivers are being warned to watch out for ice in parts of the South due to rain and chilly temperatures.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council said rain was falling througout the district today, causing roads to be wet and slippery in places.

Motorists should slow down, drive to the conditions and watch for icy patches on bridges and shady areas.

Packed snow was at the top of the Crown Range, but it had been well gritted. Chains must be carried.

Roads in Central Otago were open  and mainly dry but there was a possibility of ice forming.

Traffic is restricted to four-wheel-drive vehicles on the Danseys Pass due to snow.

The New Zealand Transport Agency advised the Milford Road (State Highway 94 Knobs Flat Depot to Murrells Creek Bridge) continued to be icy and care should be taken.

Occasional light snow was forecast for the Lewis, Arthur's and Porters alpine passes. However little, if any, should settle.
