Crash driver legs it; drink-driving surges in Queenstown

An allegedly drunk teenager ran from the scene after crashing into a parked car in Arrowtown.

Sergeant Mark Gill, of Queenstown, said the 18-year-old local was suspected of being intoxicated at the time of the incident on Devon St.

Police found him on nearby Hood Cres. The damage to both cars was ‘‘substantial’’, Sgt Gill said.

Police were awaiting the results of a blood-alcohol test.

Meanwhile, the number of people drink-driving in the resort is ‘‘far too high for this time of year’’, police say.

Over the five days to Wednesday, 10 alleged drink-drivers have been caught over the limit; some are likely to have already appeared in court.

Sergeant Keith Newell, of Queenstown, said it was ‘‘very disappointing — people should be making arrangements to get home, before they go out, instead of taking the risk of drink-driving’’.

He told the Otago Daily Times police would ‘‘keep plugging away’’ to catch drink-drivers.

He added that if people drank and drove in Queenstown there was a ‘‘good chance’’ they would be caught.
