The Crown Range Road will close briefly this morning to allow unstable rocks on the Queenstown side to be removed.
The operation just north of Eastburn Rd would begin with a period of one-lane, stop-go traffic from 10.30am followed by a closure of up to 15 minutes, the Queenstown Lakes District Council said.
This would be followed by another period of one-lane, stop-go traffic with the road back to normal two-lane operation by midday.
Roads in the area were dryer, but with temperatures still hovering around freezing in some areas there remained a risk of ice, especially in sheltered spots that get less sun during the day.
Chains should be carried over the Crown Range.
Rockfalls remained a danger across the district, especially through the Devil's Staircase between Frankton and Kingston.
