More than 1100 cyclists saddled up for a relaxing ride through Queenstown Park Station on the "other side" of the Kawarau River on Sunday.

The Porter family opens its  deer farm  to the public once a year for the 13.5km ride along the south bank to Gibbston. John Porter said: "It’s a casual ride, not a race, and a great introduction to riding tracks in Queenstown.

"We’ve had so many families here today, it’s wonderful."

Yvonne Binns, of Queensberry, said it was a good opportunity to visit an area she had last  seen in 1989.

"It’s a credit to all the people who put it together and the landowners — without their generosity, these things never happen."
