Discharge for student

A doctoral student on a "24-hour drinking bender" was arrested twice in two days in Queenstown this week after causing scenes at an ambulance station and a supermarket.

On Wednesday, Jovian Lang Parry (32) was so drunk he mistook the St John Ambulance station in Frankton for a police station, went inside and verbally abused two staff members before sitting on the floor.

When found by police  he struggled and was verbally abusive as he was arrested and handcuffed, the Queenstown District Court heard yesterday.

He admitted charges of disorderly behaviour and resisting police. Duty lawyer Louise Denton told the court Parry planned to return to Toronto today, and she sought a discharge without conviction.

Judge Callaghan said the consequences of a conviction would jeopardise the defendant’s immigration status in Canada and therefore his ability to study in that country.

He granted the discharge after Parry made a $1000 donation to St John Ambulance.
