A polar blast — which last night started moving up from the south — and is expected to bring with it snow to low levels, could not be timed more perfectly, as far as the Remarkables Ski Area manager is concerned.
This year, the Remarkables will be the first Wakatipu skifield to open, targeting June 10. Coronet Peak is expected to open on June 17.
Mr Lawrence said the forecast was for between 15cm and 20cm over the weekend.
However, winds were expected today, "so it might look like 2-5cm".
"We’ve got next to nothing ... on the ground at the moment [but] the ground is freezing and staying frozen all the time now ... so whatever starts falling now, we can expect it to start accumulating for winter."
Snow-making was expected to begin "in the next three to five days, which is right on schedule".
Mt Hutt is scheduled to open on June 9, Cardrona Alpine Resort is expected to open on June 10, and Treble Cone on June 22.
