Hundreds of snowbunnies, some equipped with pillows and blankets, were lining up from the early hours of the morning to get a bargain at Queenstown's Salvation Army yesterday.

About $40,000 had been added to the till at the Gorge Road store by 2pm.

The keenest bargain-hunters were waiting outside the shop from 3.30am, store business manager Belinda Burger said.

That was earlier than last year's shoppers.

"We had a snake queue out front and a line all the way to our back car park area."

Between 200 and 300 people lined up and the store saved all of its best gear for the occasion, she added.

The sale was an important moneymaker for the Salvation Army. With the store open until 6pm yesterday, Mrs Burger was hopeful they would reach their target of $50,000 by the end of the day.
