The grieving family of missing American man Tyler Nii has arrived in Queenstown as police continue their efforts to recover his body from Lake Wakatipu.

Mr Nii’s parents and brother were yesterday taken to the spot near where the 27-year-old tourist and an NZONE Skydive instructor plunged into the lake after a tandem jump went wrong nine days ago.

Otago Lakes Central area commander Inspector Olaf Jensen said in a statement police accompanied the family out on the lake for a blessing led by kaumatua Herewini Neho.

Among the party were deputy commissioner district operations Viv Rickard, Southern district commander Inspector Paul Basham and local staff.

"It was an honour for staff to host the family on the lake during what is a tragic time for them."

Insp Jensen said the police national dive squad had secured extra equipment for its search of the lake, using sonar apparatus, and it would be set up and tested today.
