Goat control work set to begin

Contractors will begin an annual goat control operation in Queenstown from Monday over a three-week period, weather dependent.

The operation aims to limit the damage being caused to native vegetation by wild goats, while improving safety for drivers.

It is also hoped it will reduce instances of the goats causing further nuisance on residents’ properties.

At this time of year, goats often raid urban gardens and graze close to the roads near Queenstown.

That is an issues for locals dealing with crop and flower damage.

It also affects travellers, who worry about the animals becoming a hazard to vehicles and causing traffic problems.

Queenstown Lakes District Council parks service delivery manager Clare Tomkins said the operation would target six areas, including Matakauri Park and around Arthurs Point.

Public walking tracks in the operation areas would be closed.

Contractors would carry out the operation from the ground, and they would be clearly visible, she said.

There would be clear signage on site during the closures.
