Head-on collision injures five

Two people have been cut from a vehicle on State Highway 6, between Kingston and Queenstown, this afternoon.

The head-on collision, about 20km south of Frankton, happened just before 2pm and blocked the road until a short time ago, with one lane now reopened.

St John South Island communications adviser Ian Henderson says five people have been transported to Lakes District Hospital, three with moderate injuries and two with minor injuries.

Three occupants of one vehicle, including a toddler and a pregnant woman, were understood to be tourists, while the two occupants of the other vehicle, understood to be New Zealanders, were both trapped.

They were freed by fire service volunteers using cutting equipment.

Both vehicles have sustained extensive damage.
