The car was expected to be removed from the site late yesterday.
Police said in a statement that although formal identification had yet to be completed, "all indications" were Christchurch man Kurt Sturgess was in the station wagon.
Senior Sergeant Paula Enoka, of Queenstown, said the site in Jardine Park, Kelvin Heights, remained cordoned off and under guard overnight Wednesday.
Police and ESR scientists complete their examination yesterday. Mr Sturgess’ remains and the car were then to be removed. A specialist fire investigator examined the scene on Wednesday.
