Anju Okajima (4, with pink belt) follows Issei Muta (6) and Towa Miyoshi (4) during the Bon dance, part of the second annual Natsu Matsuri Japanese Summer Festival in Queenstown on Saturday.

Organised by the Japanese Family Society of New Zealand, the festival, held at the Queenstown Memorial Centre, included sake tasting and food stalls, along with games for children, massage, arts and craft.

On stage there was live music, kendo and karate demonstrations and a bon dance, performed after a group of local children paraded their mikoshi — or portable Shinto shrine — through the crowd.
