Queenstown's supermarket kingpins are jumping shop.

Michelle and Anthony King, who have run the Remarkables Park New World for the past five years, have confirmed they will own and operate the resort's low-cost Pak'n Save supermarket.

The $30million, 5700sqm Pak'n Save, beside the Mitre 10 Mega hardware store, will open late this year.

Pak'n Save and New World are both Foodstuffs supermarkets.

Mr King said: "Because of the way the Foodstuffs rules work, you need to be approved to own a New World/Pak'n Save supermarket, and due to the size and popularity of Queenstown, it's likely to go to another New World owner who's moving from their store.''

Pak'n Save will be the third supermarket on the Frankton Flats, after Countdown opened at Five Mile late last year.

Mr King has no doubt there is room for three: "Everyone knows the growth phase Queenstown's going through at the moment.''

The local Pak'n Save, approved after three years of legal wrangling, will be the 54th in the country and will include a self-service petrol station.

Builder Naylor Love broke ground for the supermarket last October.
