Hundreds of homes have lit up across the Wakatipu Basin this weekend as part of Lumify, a DIY replacement event for the cancelled Luma.

Like many other events in 2020, the annual Luma Festival was forced to pull the plug back in March due to Covid-19.

Established in 2016, Luma has drawn thousands to the region.

Luma staff member Sunny Sky said despite the cancellation her team still wanted to bring some light and excitement to people’s homes.

“A group of us who normally work for Luma have said, ‘right let’s do it from home’.”

“As a community initiative we’ve been going around to the neighbourhoods and telling people to light up their homes and lift community spirits.”

People have been using whatever they could get their hands on to give their houses a vibrant new look.

Sky said her team was now looking to make Lumify a part of the wider Luma event for 2021.
