From July 1 vehicles parked along State Highway 6, between the BP roundabout and Kawarau Falls bridge will be towed away. Two major projects will open at Frankton this morning, which together aim to ease congestion and improve safety in the area.

At 10.30am Queenstown Lakes Mayor Jim Boult will officially open the first stage of the Eastern Access Rd - formally known as Hawthorne Dr - which the public will be able to use from 11.30am.

The 2km stretch of road will enable motorists to drive from Remarkables Park, around the back of Queenstown Airport to Glenda Dr.

The second stage of the project, extending the new road from Glenda Dr to an internal roundabout near Pak 'n' Save is due for completion in December.

At 11am today, Queenstown Airport will open its park and ride facility on the Frankton Flats.

Half of the 300 car parks will be available at the park, behind Mitre 10 Mega in Brookes Rd, from today and the remaining 150 will be in place by year end.

The ''pay to park, free to ride'' model enables airport users out of town for two or more days to park at the facility and then take a shuttle to the airport.

The 11-seater shuttle and trailer will initially run every 30 minutes on the hour and half-hour during the 12-month trial.

Simultaneously, the NZ Transport Agency is banning vehicles from parking along State Highway 6 between the BP roundabout and the Kawarau Falls bridge. Enforcement - delegated to Queenstown Lakes District Council - will begin on July 1.

Vehicles parked anywhere along that stretch of road will be towed away.
