Man charged over ill-advised vigilante action

A 19-year-old German man who took matters into his own hands when he believed another man took the wrong bag has been charged with assault.

Acting Sergeant Terry Wood, of Queenstown, said the teenager had been at McDonald's, on Camp Street, early this morning and believed he saw a 27-year-old New Zealand man steal someone else's bag.

"He was just watching, something happened and he thought 'that doesn't look right'.

The teenager followed the man and approached him near Hotops Rise.

"They got into an altercation and the German ... ended up assaulting the New Zealand male.

"He's given him a fat lip and a bleeding nose.

"He was arrested and will go to court.''

Sgt Wood said the bag which caused the issue belonged to the New Zealand man.
