The male driver of an extensively damaged Ford Falcon has been taken to hospital after a three-car nose-to-tail in Queenstown.

The other drivers -- of a Holden Colorado utility and a Mitsubishi Pajero -- appeared to be uninjured by the crash, which happened just before 5pm, on State Highway 6, near the Shotover Bridge.

Constable Matthew Hargreaves, of Queenstown, said the cause of the crash was not immediately known.
