Car parking is to be extended and toilets provided for visitors at the Blue Pools tourist stop on State Highway 6 near Makarora.

New Zealand Transport Agency senior safety engineer Roy Johnston said the work to increase the number of car parks along the section of the Haast Pass to Makarora Rd would take place some time before September of this year.

Department of Conservation (Doc) senior ranger Annette Grieve said Doc expected the toilets would be built by next summer.

She said NZTA had identified the need for more car parking. It would be on road reserve and not encroach on the Mt Aspiring National Park.

Doc also intended to replace the toilet block at the Cameron Flat camp ground.

Ms Grieves said the status of the unmanned Doc visitor centre at Makarora was to remain unchanged. Doc continued to call for expressions of interest for future building use.
