Work is continuing on the historic Kawarau Falls Bridge to convert it to part of the Queenstown Trail for cyclists and pedestrians.

Both lanes of the new, $22million bridge, between Kelvin Heights and Frankton on State Highway 6, opened to traffic in May.

The NZ Transport Agency said refurbishment of the old one-way bridge was under way.

Temporary grit and seal used to improve traction on the deck had been removed and piling for a new boardwalk had been completed.

Handrails on the bridge would be refurbished and the old safety vehicle barriers removed to make the new dedicated walking and cycling bridge more accessible.

On the northern side of the bridge an underpass was ‘‘90% complete’’ and needed only some ‘‘aesthetic finishing touches’’, while on the southern embankment, landscaping was beginning.

That would include removing white protective covering and replanting to restore vegetation. ‘‘New planting and hydro-seeding in spring will return the area to its original appearance and help minimise run-off.’
