Police are looking to identify two men after an Australian tourist was taken to hospital following a serious assault in Shotover St this morning in which his head was slammed into a concrete bin.

Police have released the images of two men they are looking to identify in relation to the assault.

Sergeant Kate Pirovano, of Queenstown, said the 22-year-old man and a friend were outside Fergburger about 4am when they were attacked, "totally unprovoked'', by an unidentified man.

The offender "turned up wanting to fight'', and after causing another scuffle nearby, attacked the victims, Sgt Pirovano said.

One of the victims was headbutted and then punched several times in the face. When he tried to run away, the offender chased him and "slammed his head into a concrete bin''.

The injured victim was taken to Lakes District Hospital for treatment for a suspected broken nose and suspected concussion.

Police said the first of the men they were looking for in relation to the assault had a solid build and was wearing light-coloured pants, a light coloured cap, a black and orange hooded sweatshirt and black shoes.

"One picture shows him wearing the black and orange sweatshirt.

"The second picture shows him carrying the sweatshirt, and you can see a distinctive sleeve tattoo on his left arm."

The second man is described as having a medium build, wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt, green pants, a green/grey beanie, and black Nike skate shoes, police said.

If you have information which could police identify these two men, please call Queenstown Police on 03 441 1600.

Police said it would also like to speak to anyone who witnessed the assault or assisted the two victims at the time.
