The collapse of a retaining wall will lead to a reduced road on what is always a tough piece of highway.

During high winds last week, a portion of a retaining wall below State Highway 6, near the Devil’s Staircase, collapsed and was washed into Lake Wakatipu.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency Central Otago senior network manager Robert Choveaux said 15m was lost and more could subside if wild weather persisted.

That, coupled with already saturated ground, had resulted in the loss of a significant amount of the road shoulder and one lane had been undermined.

Erosion protection measures were being considered but the road would be down to one lane.

It was hoped the road could be fixed in two months.
