Queenstown tourism operator Skyline Enterprises has been formally congratulated by South Korean government officials at the opening ceremony for its $20million luge investment in Tongyeong City.

The company said in a statement about 210 local and national government officials, community leaders and local residents gathered at the new Tongyeong luge site on Wednesday to officially open project which was opened to the public in February.

Built in just 15 months, the Skyline Luge Tongyeong project was believed to be the largest direct capital investment in South Korea by a New Zealand company.

Skyline executive chairman Mark Quickfall said the opening of Tongyeong development was an important milestone in the company’s history.

"Skyline created the world’s first luge cart on wheels almost 35 years ago and we are immensely proud that it has become a global tourism success."

The Tongyeong development had been a vision of Skyline for the past five years, he said.

Since opening in February, Skyline Luge Tongyeong had exceeded expectations for visitor numbers — 216,000 people rode the Luge in two months.

The complex was located directly below the coastal city’s  Hallyeosudo Landscape Cable Car. Tongyeong was a domestic tourism hot spot and the cable car attracted more than one million visitors each year.

One of the planned six tracks had been completed, with the remaining five due to be finished as demand required, Mr Quickfall said.

●Skyline has been operating the luge since 1985 in New Zealand. It has sites in New Zealand (Queenstown and Rotorua), Canada and Singapore. Skyline Luge Tongyeong is the company’s sixth site.
