Still plenty for crowd at JazzFest

It might have been smaller this year, but there was still plenty of music to keep punters entertained during the Queenstown JazzFest.

The main event  was a free concert at Earnslaw Park, where a solid line-up of local talent played tunes all  Saturday afternoon.

The festival has been held in the resort for four decades, but this year organisers decided to downsize it as its future is considered. On Saturday, JazzFest Trust member Luke Baldock said the trust wanted to put on some events this year to ensure there were opportunities for  high school musicians to  progress.

"It’s a beautiful day, the sun is shining, there’s lots of people around town, we’ve just had the high school band perform and it’s fantastic to have them on stage.

"The day’s going fantastic."

The high school band in question was Best Served Chilled, from Wakatipu High School. Its members were all smiles when they got off the stage after performing for a big crowd.

Band member Rafe Swan said the crowd had been "really interactive".

As for the future of JazzFest, it is looking like it will come under the umbrella of a new, larger arts and music festival.

Mr Baldock said there was an opportunity "to create something quite unique".

"It’s early days, but the trust will likely be talking to a range of stakeholders, from venue owners to members of the resort’s creative community."
