Tramper believed to have died on Routeburn Track

An overdue tramper was rescued from the Routeburn Track tonight, but her male companion is believed to have died in a fall earlier today.

Otago Lakes Central area commander Inspector Olaf Jensen said police were notified after the two trampers failed to return at their scheduled time.

Search and rescue (SAR) staff were deployed in a helicopter and found the woman in one of the huts along the track.

"Her male companion is believed to have died after falling down a slope," he said.

Police and SAR will return to the track tomorrow in an effort to locate her companion, conditions permitting, he said.
