International ride-sharing giant Uber has hit the road in Queenstown.

The company launched in the resort yesterday, a week after starting up in Dunedin.

An Uber spokeswoman said a ``couple of dozen'' drivers had registered in town so far.

More than 200,000 people from 88 countries had already opened the app in Queenstown prior to the launch, she said.

Clutha-Southland MP Hamish Walker, was the first person to jump in the passenger's seat, taking a ride with new Uber driver Emily Hay yesterday.

Mr Walker believed Uber would help ease some of the parking and congestion issues in Queenstown, as well as raising the bar in the taxi industry.

The first Uber service in New Zealand got under way in Auckland in 2014.
