Water restrictions are in place in Arrowtown until further notice as hot weather, low rainfall and unprecedented demand take their toll on the township's reservoir level.
Announced by the Queenstown Lakes District Council yesterday, the restrictions mean residents cannot use sprinklers or outdoor hosing and must switch off automatic watering systems.
They can only water their gardens and lawns by hand with a watering can or bucket filled directly from a tap.
Council property and infrastructure maintenance and operations manager Erin Moogan said the township's reservoir was about 55% full and needed to be replenished.
''With the holiday population expected to remain high for the next few weeks, we're calling on all residents, visitors and local businesses to reduce usage now so the reservoir can refill.
''[We're hoping to] avoid reaching critical levels that could result in a boil water notice.''
