About 100 primary school pupils from around the Wakatipu Basin converged on Arrowtown School to learn about Matariki yesterday.

The school hosted the second annual Wakatipu Basin Matariki Celebration, which featured games, workshops and kapa haka performances.

Matariki is the Maori name for the cluster of stars also known as Pleiades. It rises in midwinter and for many Maori it heralds the start of a new year.

Pictured showing  her flax-weaving skills is St Joseph’s School Queenstown pupil Georgia Henderson (12).

Another celebration of Matariki will be held on the Library Green in Arrowtown on June 28.
