Witnesses sought after car blocked, occupant assaulted

Police are appealing for CCTV footage and witnesses after a man was hit with a bottle during an altercation between two groups on a Queenstown road.

Two men blocked the path of a vehicle with three occupants in Turner St about 9.45pm on Friday night and kicked and threw items at it.

Senior Sergeant Paula Enoka said one of the occupants got out of the car and was approached from behind and hit on the side of the head with an object believed to be a bottle.

The injured man was taken to Lakes District Hospital for treatment.

Officers seized the bottle for forensic analysis and are calling for witnesses to contact police.

A suspected drink-driver is due in court this week charged with driving with excess breath alcohol.

The 30-year-old foreign national registered 547mcg when stopped by officers in Park St at 4am on Sunday.

Snr Sgt Enoka said the man was believed to have driven through a red light with no headlights on.

A car fire outside an apartment block in Panorama Tce on Saturday morning is not being treated as suspicious by police, who believe it was accidental.

Specialist fire investigators are looking into the cause.
