A 56-year-old woman from Whangarei was airlifted from the Rees-Dart track this morning, after falling and breaking her wrist.

A Maritime New Zealand media spokesman said the woman, on a solo hike, activated her personal locator beacon about 7.45am.

An Otago Helicopter, with winching equipment and a paramedic on board, was dispatched and arrived on the scene, about 1.5km from Daleys Flat Hut, an hour later.

The spokesman said the helicopter was able to land near where the woman was and transported her to Lakes District Hospital.
