A multimillion-dollar house and a range of farm machinery was destroyed in a fire near Twizel this week.

The fire, which scorched more than 3000ha and forced the evacuation of several properties, was still being attended by firefighters yesterday, who were dealing with hot spots.

George Ormond, of Pukaki Downs Station, said the farm’s lavender field and several stands of planted trees were saved, but the property still sustained serious losses.

"These included a multimillion-dollar house, tractors and other farm equipment.

"Without the selfless, courageous actions of the helicopter crews and the ground fire crews, we would have lost a lot more, including our valuable inventory of lavender oil that the firefighters helped us salvage."

The fire broke out on Sunday, but a cold snap earlier this week which brought rain and snow to the region helped emergency services bring the blaze under control.

"We want to express our sincere gratitude for the efforts of ground and helicopter crews who worked long hours in strong winds and very challenging conditions," Mr Ormond said.

"The fire crews, many of whom are volunteers, risked their lives to contain the fire, protect our houses and farm buildings, and prevent the fire from spreading further north."
