College team again wins Agrikids trophy

A West Otago school, and two local families, have triumphed again in the Agrikids Challenge.

Following the 2019 victory by a Blue Mountain College team in the annual competition, a companion event to the Junior Young Farmer of the Year, the school’s "West Otago Rams" team were awarded the trophy for winning the 2020 edition on Friday.

Charlie Ottrey (12), Dylan Young (12), and Riley Hill (13) were happy but "overwhelmed" to have won.

Dylan and Riley’s brothers were in the Blue Mountain College team which won last year.

Three South Island regional finals and the grand final were either cancelled or held online due to Covid-19 restrictions.

In Friday’s grand final, 21 teams completed a series of modules and tasks, as well as an exam.

The top five point-scoring teams then took part in a live online quiz.

“They were correctly answering questions that I didn’t even know the answers to," organiser Lynda Coppersmith said.

"It just goes to show how bright the future of agriculture is looking with so many children starting their interest, involvement and contribution in the sector at such a young age.”
