Council seeks higher discharge level

The Clutha District Council (CDC) hopes to increase the disposal limits on the oxidation pond near Balclutha in order to lower its level, as it has remained high since an overflow incident last year.

In an agenda item for this week's standing committee meetings, CDC said it was working with the Otago Regional Council (ORC) to get permission to discharge above its consent limits.

CDC hoped to lower the pond level as it was still ''very high'' and had ''not recovered'' from an overflow incident in November last year.

The Clutha council was fined $750 by the regional council for the overflow incident.

Pond levels have been monitored since the event and it is discharging at the consent limit.

Fulton Hogan and CDC were monitoring the pump to ensure it was at maximum pumping capacity.
