The Clutha District Council has decided to make parking enforcement a focus and ensure parking will remain available in the central business district.

The council endorsed an enforcement strategy and prosecution policy at a council meeting which included a secondary focus of parking.

An increase in random checks and warnings would happen where there was the possibility of lengthy parking stays in time-restricted areas or parking outside designated spots.

Clutha district council planning and regulatory manager David Campbell said the decision to make parking a focus meant there would be resources to keep parking accessible for people.

''Parking was informally a part of our activity but this gives us the opportunity to keep an eye on it.

''In Balclutha there are definitely hot spots where parking is sometimes difficult, such as Clutha Health First and Elizabeth St. We're pretty lucky, because generally you can get parking outside or near to where you need to go.''

Mr Campbell said last year the council worked with the hospital on a successful operation to monitor parking around the area.

''We issued warnings to people who overstayed the time limits of parks. Tickets are a powerful tool so we only use them if they're repeat offenders.''

''Shop owners do tell council about the public. If we get a complaint from them about ... parking we will act on it.

Johnstone Electrical employee Mary Johnstone said she thought it would be a waste of resources for the council to monitor parking.

''I don't think there is a problem at all with parking in Balclutha. Everyone who comes here does so in cars, so that just shows you. People do sometimes stay longer than 60 minutes but it doesn't matter, because there's always another park nearby.

She said there might be trouble around lunchtime finding main street parks, but never for long.

''I've never had trouble with parking myself. Most people on the main street are passing through town and want to grab a bite to eat or stop somewhere briefly. If they can't get a park they'll go to the next place.''

Johnstone Electrical employee Lisa Morris said she did not realise there were 60-minute signs outside.
