The West Otago Community Board will work with the Clutha District Council to identify trees in Tapanui which are in danger of being blown over or having branches come off.

Concerns were raised at a community board meeting earlier this week about the safety of certain tall trees, after high winds across the Clutha district in the past few months brought some trees down.

Community board member Michelle Kennedy said some of the "lovely old trees" might need to be trimmed to ensure public safety.

She identified stretches of Derby St and Cemetery Rd as having trees that could be targeted.

It was agreed the most hazardous trees might have to be removed entirely.

Council service delivery group manager Jules Witt said the town had gone through a similar "berm trees project" 10 years ago, picking out trees close to properties that needed to be trimmed or cut down.

"Records were kept of which trees needed done before ... We can just do that again," he said.

Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan said it was an important project and could be rolled out to other parts of the district as required.

"Trees falling in our district are our responsibility ... As mayor and as councillors that weighs heavily on our conscience."
