More than 18 cars converged at Burma Rd to participate in a maiden hill climb event last Saturday.

It was the South Otago Car Club's second major gravel event since the club's revival a year ago.

The 4km gravel road at the western end of Manuka Gorge was a fantastic spot to hold the event, organiser Dean McCrostie said.

''We had so many people backing the event. Council got behind us 100%.

''The feedback we got from the New Zealand Motorsport official there was that our safety and communication were impressive and that we were up there with the best. So it was a very successful day.''

It was hoped the Burma Rd Hill Climb would become an annual event.

Dean Bond took the top spot with an ''absolutely unbelievable'' best time of 2min 12sec, followed by Chris Hey with a top time of 2min 14sec and Nigel Lawson with 2min 22sec.

Hey said the event was fantastic and something he hoped to participate again.

''It was one of the best hill climb roads I've been on and it was superbly organised.''
