For 44 years Pam Henderson and Mary Hay have helped the community through their local Inner Wheel group.

Last week they were recognised for their efforts, both receiving long-term membership awards acknowledging the service they had given to the group.

The Balclutha Inner Wheel group began in 1974 for the wives of Rotary club members, with Mrs Henderson and Mrs Hay two of the founding members.

Mrs Hay said being a part of Inner Wheel was the best decision she had ever made.

''We've both hardly missed a meeting and I think that shows how much we love it.

''The friends I've made are the best thing. There's always someone to call.''

Mrs Henderson said throughout the 44 years they had raised money for countless organisations and had baked countless cakes for all occasions.

''The aims of the club are friendship, fellowship and community service. It becomes a part of you. I've gained friends as well as doing something for the community.''

Mrs Henderson said she would continue attending for the rest of her life.

''As long as I can walk out the door I'll be going to Inner Wheel.''
