A fire in trees near Heriot, in West Otago, last night looks to be under control.
About 20 firefighters were last night still fighting the 500m-long blaze on Charteris Bush Rd at Leithen Bush.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) spokeswoman last night said three fire appliances and five water tankers had been called in after an alert at 5.15pm, and a helicopter with monsoon bucket had also fought the blaze.
A Fenz spokesman this morning said one crew had remained on site overnight, and that firefighters and forestry contractors would work to dampen any hotspots today.
