Man arrested after sawn-off shotgun found

A man has been arrested in Balclutha after police confiscated a sawn-off shotgun and a large amount of ammunition from his house.

After receiving confidential information about the existence of the weapon, officers yesterday went to the residence suspected where the man met them at the front door, Constable Lucy Catchpole said.

An armed offenders squad from Dunedin was on hand.

"He was fully co-operative," she said.

The man did not have a firearms licence and had most likely altered the weapon himself, she said.

"It's not a common occurrence in this area, but it's always worrying when we do find this kind of thing."

Constable Darren Huddleston said that the man had been arrested and charged and would appear in the Dunedin District Court next Tuesday.
