Nuggets facilities on agenda for tourism meeting

Plans to improve visitor facilities at Nugget Point will be a key issue at this month's Tourism Catlins annual meeting.

The group, which was formed to promote tourism in the area and deliver key projects identified in the 5-year-old Catlins tourism strategy, will gather at the Tahakopa Hall on May 29 from 7.30pm.

After the election of officers for the coming year and other annual meeting business, attention will turn to what the Department of Conservation (Doc) would like to see happen at and around Nugget Point - regarded as one of the district's main visitor attractions.

The presentation by Doc's coastal Otago area manager, Robin Thomas, is one it will also take to the Clutha District Council in coming weeks, as it looks to work together with various groups to ensure the most cost-effective facilities are based there to deal with visitors flocking to the area's lighthouse and coastal views.

Doc plans to expand the visitor car park, improve walking tracks and increase signage, while the council hopes to get Government funding to seal the Nuggets Rd, from Willsher Bay 10km along the coast to the Nuggets.

More toilets and enhancing the viewing areas at Nugget Point and Roaring Bay are also on the agenda.
