One killed as car, truck collide on SH1; three others injured

One person  died and three others were injured in a car crash south of Milton on State Highway 1 yesterday afternoon.

A police spokeswoman said the accident happened near Moneymore Rd, just south of the State Highway 8 intersection about 12.30pm.

A car travelling north  and a truck travelling south collided, blocking both lanes of SH1.A  van  following  the northbound car  veered off the road into a ditch, ending up on its side.

A St John spokesman said two ambulances and a helicopter were sent to the scene.

Ambulance officers treated one person with moderate injuries at the scene, who was later airlifted to Dunedin Hospital.

They also treated two people for minor injuries at the scene.

The highway was closed yesterday afternoon  and diversions were in place for light traffic at Adams Flat Rd and Creighton Rd. Heavy trucks were periodically being allowed through.

The highway  reopened again at 6.20pm yesterday.The Serious Crash Unit would investigate the crash, police said.
