The prospect of a new cenotaph for Tapanui has been boosted by a funding pledge from the West Otago Community Board.

During its meeting last week, the board pledged up to $10,000 towards a new cenotaph on or near the Tapanui RSA grounds.

At present, Tapanui’s community gym houses its honours boards.

Board chairwoman Barbara Hannasaid an open-air memorial would allow full-time access to the roll of honour, and a future focus for Anzac Day ceremonies in the town.

The RSA will decide at its next meeting whether to proceed with the project.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
