The solo father from Milton whose house was destroyed in a fire last week says there are no words to express  his gratitude to those who have helped him and his daughter move into a new house this week.

James Winter and his daughter Janae (7) struggled to find a new place to stay but thanks to an elderly couple in Milton the father and daughter have the "foundation to build a new life".

Mr Winter said there were no words to express how grateful he was to the couple for helping him and his daughter.

He also expressed his sincerest gratitude to the whole Milton community and the surrounding area.

Mr Winter had connected with some people on Facebook who had gone through a similar situation and they had been very supportive.

He said if it was not for Janae being able to handle the situation so well, he would not be coping.

She was an amazing little girl, he said.

"To see a girl her age be humble is something special when she doesn’t even know the meaning of the word."

She had adapted to the situation "really well", and everything was going normally at St Mary’s school, which Janae attends.

"We’re really happy with where she is at."

It was also important Janae was allowed to keep her cat, Blaze, at the new house.

Many people donated goods and pieces of furniture to replace what they lost in the fire.

They even had to turn some donations of clothes away as they had received more than they needed.

Mr Winter said the school’s help had been the "backbone for us getting back on our feet".

"We’ve settled down.

"We know we’ve got a roof over our head, we know we’ve got three cooked meals a day."

Mr Winter and Janae still had to collect some bigger furniture items but had the majority of what they needed at the new house.
