The  group behind the recently developed skate park at Kaitangata last night won the Supreme Award at the Trustpower Clutha District Community Awards.

The Kaitangata Skate Park Development Group beat 23 other community groups nominated from the Clutha district in the awards, presented at the Rosebank Lodge.

Trustpower community relations representative Emily Beaton said the group worked hard to provide a ``fantastic facility for the community''.

Plans for the park started about two years ago and it was ``long haul'' raising the $100,000 budgeted for the project.

For winning the Supreme Award, the development group received $1500 and a trophy, and will have the opportunity to represent the district at the national community awards in Rotorua next year.

Group chairman Dallas Storer accepted the award on behalf of the group.

He also received a civic award for individuals.

Ms Beaton said the group achieved the massive fundraising feat by applying for grants, organising quiz and trail bike events and preparing the site for construction.

``And then eventually helping to build it, of course,'' she said.

The 300sq m park was officially opened earlier this year after Mr Storer and several volunteers, including Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan, got stuck in and built sections of the park themselves.

``We think that these volunteers have made an absolutely outstanding contribution to the Clutha district community and we can't wait for them to share their story with the rest of the country,'' Ms Beaton said.

Other winners last night included the Owaka 150th Committee, which topped the heritage and environment section, the Tuapeka Aquatic Centre committee, which won the sport and leisure section, and the Clutha Valley Parent Teacher Association in the education section.
