Enrolments for programmes offered at the Telford division of Lincoln University are going ahead, as negotiations continue with a new provider to take over the South Otago campus.

Lincoln pulled support last year, but announced this morning that enrolments at the Telford Campus, near Balclutha, would open today as per usual.

Telford division interim director Joan Grace said she expected to welcome a large number of students at the end of this month.

"In committing to the 2017 programmes, Lincoln University has taken into account the importance of Telford to the community and to the industry,'' she said.

Some programmes for the year included the Certificate in Agriculture, Diploma in Agriculture and the Diploma of Rural Veterinary Technicians, which had been offered for several years.

Lincoln confirmed that discussions were progressing with the North-Island based Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre for a possible transfer of Telford operations to Taratahi.

Taratahi, near Masterton, operated a similar vocational agricultural education and training programme to Telford.

A statement of intent had been signed between Lincoln University, Taratahi and the Telford Farm Board covering the ongoing discussions. The document included provision for the transfer to Taratahi.

The Tertiary Education Commission was being kept informed during the process.

Telford Farm Board chairman Murray Pilgrim said he was "delighted with the progress made so far''.

"A positive outcome will ensure the successful continuation of vocational training for the industry,'' he said.

Lincoln University remained committed to ensuring its teaching obligations to students.

Students who start at Telford this year, and who successfully complete their enrolled programmes, would receive a Lincoln University qualification.
