A truck driver has been flown to hospital with serious injuries after a crash near Balclutha this morning.

A police spokeswoman said emergency services were called to the scene on Milton Highway, State Highway 1, shortly before 5am.

The truck crashed and ended up on its side, the spokeswoman said.

The driver was trapped in the vehicle for some time before being freed, she said.

The driver had sustained serious injuries and was flown by the Otago Rescue Helicopter to Dunedin Hospital, she said.

The Serious Crash Unit and Vehicle Safety Team was investigating and the road was initially closed at the intersection of Benhar Rd, with detours in place.

The road reopened shortly after 8am but the NZ Transport Agency said a stop-go control system was in place as well as a temporary speed restriction.

Drivers were warned of delays and asked to take care.

The spokeswoman said it was expected the road may close again so the vehicle could be retrieved.
