"There is nothing very exciting about what I did — it just happened," Lorraine Wright says.

That is her modest perspective of reaching 100 years old.

The Resthaven Village resident celebrated her birthday with family and friends at the rest-home yesterday.

She was not sure why she had lived so long but she did keep good health.

"I’ve never been sick.

"You just live ’cause you live.

"If you’re meant to live that long you live that long."

Mrs Wright, nee Cameron, was born in Gore. Her family moved to Timaru for a few years before returning to the family farm at Wendonside.

After attending Gore High School she trained as a primary school teacher in Dunedin during the war.

"I don’t think I was the best one.

"All the men got pushed off to the army or air force."

She was a keen sportswoman and represented Otago at hockey.

"I loved hockey."

In 1944 she married her high school sweetheart Jim.

The couple lived in various locations where Mr Wright worked as a meteorologist but later the family shifted to her parents’ farm at Wendonside.

Raising six children who "turned out normal" is what she is most proud of.

"Nobody did drastic things.

"They didn’t give me any worries."

There was never any arguing in the family because Mr Wright did not believe in it.

"Therefore the family learned to live that way, too."

Mrs Wright has 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
