A 20-year-old man appeared in the Invercargill District Court yesterday after he allegedly knocked a police officer unconscious early on Sunday morning.
No plea was entered by Whaitiri David Malachi Junior Richardson, who came before Judge Mark Callaghan on charges of aggravated wounding, assaulting a police officer, attempting to avoid arrest and disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence.
Police said two male officers were on patrol in the city about 2.30am when they were assaulted by a man at the intersection of Dee and Don Sts.
An application for bail was granted by Judge Callaghan, with the conditions Richardson did not consume alcohol or attend any licensed premises, must undergo a breath-screening test if called upon, and did not have any contact with the two police officers or witnesses.
Richardson will reappear in court on October 2.
