Art, kids’ events latest affected

Great South has cancelled a further two major Invercargill events in response to the Government’s latest advice on mass gatherings.

The Southland Arts Festival, which was scheduled to be held from May 1-16, and the ILT Kidzone Festival, which was to be held from July 8-13, were cancelled yesterday.

Earlier this week, the Government announced all indoor events with 100 people or more should be cancelled to limit the spread of Covid-19.

Events have been cancelled across the district including the Bluff Oyster Festival, the Tussock Country Music Festival in Gore, the Luma light festival in Queenstown, the Oamaru Jazz Festival and Warbirds over Wanaka.

Great South chief executive Graham Budd said while ‘‘disappointing’’, it was the ‘‘appropriate and right decision’’ to make for Southland’s community.

Great South major events co-ordinator and ILT Kidzone Festival director Karen Witham said despite the cancellation, plans would be under way soon for the 2021 event.

Ms Witham said she was pleased to be able to give Southlanders ‘‘something to look forward to’’ at this time.
